During the past 30 years, a number of different processes have been applied for the recovery of vapour from various emission sources. The technologies applied include:
-
Pressure Swing Adsorption - PSA (Activated Carbon)
-
Cold Liquid Absorption - CLA
-
Pressurised Liquid Absorption - PLA
-
Cryo Condensation
-
Direct Condensation.
Carbon Vacuum-regenerated Adsorption – CVA
In recent decades, recovery by means of activated carbon adsorption has become established as the prevailing technology. Today vapour recovery is almost synonymous with the Carbon Vacuum-regenerated Adsorption technology.
The highly efficient and reliable CVA process is the most economical recovery technology available. Both with regard to capital investment, installation costs and operation costs.
Activated carbon
The CVA system uses activated carbon to adsorb the hydrocarbons from the product vapour. Activated carbon is a very porous material with an enormous surface area. Seven grammes of activated carbon have an active surface the size of an entire football arena.
Applications
The CVA technology is used for the following applications:
-
truck and rail car loading
-
balanced vapour systems
-
tank filling
-
marine loading systems
-
shuttle tankers and FPSO systems.
