The majority of chemicals loaded globally are via the top of the tanker. The reasons are fairly simple. Tankers are effectively barrels on wheels. They have a hole in the top to fill it. A valve outlet will allow for emptying. They can be used on a variety of chemicals and only need cleaning for another service.
Top loading technology has improved over the last decades. New production materials and seal compounds have improved reliability enormously.
Tanker heights and fall prevention
There is an issue that dominates the upgrading of top loading facilities and that is the height of the tankers. Since the 1970’s tanker barrel heights have grown from an average of 3.4 metres to a maximum of 4.2 metres.
This poses many problems with the low loading racks. They cannot provide safe access onto the tanker tops using the existing access systems. Furthermore, stringent health legislation obliges the need for a safe working area on top of a tanker.
So, there is increasing need for new or modified loading systems. Consisting of top loading arms, access platform and fall prevention systems. Engiflow can provide a solution for each individual item or for a complete system.
