Tank blanketing: avoiding dangers of fire

A tank blanketing valve regulates the flow of a blanketing gas into the vapour space of storage tanks. Protectoseal has the perfect blanketing valve specifically designed for low flow requirements. It provides an effective means of preventing and controlling fires in tanks or vessels filled with flammable liquid.

Vapours cannot be ignited in the absence of an adequate supply of oxygen. In most cases the oxygen is provided by air. This air is drawn into the tank from the atmosphere during tank emptying operations.

How it works

Tank blanketing valves are installed with their inlet connected to a supply of pressurized inert gas, usually Nitrogen. Their outlet is connected to the tank's vapour space. When the tank pressure drops below a predetermined level, the blanketing valve opens. It allows for a flow of inert gas into the vapour space. The blanketing valve reseals when pressure in the tank has returned to an acceptable level.

The Series No. 20 valve have a main valve that controls the flow of inert gas into the tank. The pilot valve accurately senses the tank's pressure and controls the opening and closing of the main valve. This tandem valve arrangement provides extremely accurate control of the flow of gas into the tank.

The Series No. 30 valve is spring operated. The spring force holds the pressure balanced poppet in its closed position. The tank's vapour space pressure is sensed in the diaphragm case. The Series No. 30 valve is suitable for use on smaller tanks and vessels.
